Djokovic wins the second set 6-3 to level the score at 1-1
Norrie 6-2, 3-6 Djokovic* (* denotes server) Not the best start from Djokovic, who double faults. 0-15. He then fires a woeful shot into the net when he was well positioned on the pitch. 0-30 with Djokovic playing as badly as he did in the first set. However, normal service continues, with Djokovic winning two first serves to take the set. He gets it, thanks to an unforced error by Norrie. One set each. Nori 6-2, 3-5 Djokovic ( indicates server) Norry does everything right at 15-15 before missing a backhand volley into the net that would have left 99 out of 100. 15-30 and more pressure on the Brit . Djokovic sees a Norrie drop shot coming from a mile away on the next point and puts it away for two break points. This time Norrie breaks, hitting his forehand away and Djokovic, looking more like himself now, will serve for the second set. British Alfie Hewett in the men’s wheelchair final!
Hewett fights back from a break down in the deciding set to beat Argentina’s Gustavo Fernández 2-6, 7-6, 6-4. It is his first Wimbledon final. And it absolutely buzzes. What a player he is. However, a beautiful backhand down the line sees Djokovic blast the ball into the net. 30-30. A ferocious forehand from Norrie that misses half a meter gives Djokovic another break point. Can he take it? No. A good wide serve from Nori helps him break through. Norrie has to fight for another break point after a bad forehand, but he does, aggressively. He takes the game after winning a choppy backhand back and forth. He’s good at them. Norrie 6-2, 2-3 Djokovic* (* indicates server) Norrie moves Djokovic after a good serving performance, winning the first point with an overhead smash. 0-15. However, Djokovic shows better artistry in the next two points and looks a little happier as he finds the corners of the court with his open forehand. 30-15. A couple of long serves give Norrie no chance and it’s a limit at 15 for Djokovic, who gives Norrie very little to work with now that he’s leveled up his game. Norrie 6-2, 2-2 Djokovic ( indicates serve) Two big first serves, including an ace, take Norrie to 30-0. A flash of his forehand puts Djokovic at 15-30, then Norry hits a forehand into the middle of the court when he really should have won the point. Provokes but no dice. Now the pressure is on Norrie as he puts a weak forehand into the net. Breakpoint. A brave and brilliant point from Norrie, who follows up a vicious forehand and volleys home to bring the deuce up, saves it. Djokovic tries to fend off a second serve when Norrie has the advantage but finds the net. Nori holds on. Norrie 6-2, 1-2 Djokovic* (* stands for server) Norrie tries to make Djokovic miss with some low, straight backhands, but the Serb is much more accurate this time and looks more confident when faces them. He doesn’t miss a beat and it’s Norrie who makes irreparable mistakes. And at 40-0 he served-volleyed to hold for a second straight service game. Nori 6-2, 1-1 Djokovic ( indicates waiter) A bad mistake by Nori at the net after a good serve gave Djokovic a rotten one at 30-30. Norrie forces Djokovic into a corner and is presented with the same kind of backhand volley again. No alarms and no surprises this time, though. He softs it across the court to win the point. 40-30. Norrie benefits from a net at the next point. Sorry but not sorry. It’s a hold. Norrie 6-2, 0-1 Djokovic* (* denotes server) This is the Djokovic we know. Norrie wins the first set against Djokovic 6-2
Nori 6-2 Djokovic ( means server) Djokovic looks like he just wants to finish this first set so he can start again. It’s a wait at 15 for Norrie, with Djokovic helping out with some unforced errors. Norrie doesn’t even serve particularly well. He double faults twice. It is at 42% on first serves. He slams down at 127mph to go up 40-15, the mind and then an ace gives him the first set. Wow. At 15-0, he throws another goal into the net. He did so often in this first set. 15-15. On the next point, he slides a nasty forehand wide enough as if he’s an excitable teenager rather than a 20-time slam winner. 15-30. Norrie brings up two more break points by running a weak drop shot and putting it away comfortably. She’s not going to break him again like this? Yes he is. He simply beats Djokovic on a rally and makes the great find the net again. This is an incredible start from the Brit, but more importantly, a terrible one from Djokovic. He will definitely get better. He should. Norrie 4-2 Djokovic ( denotes server) Can Norrie Consolidate? Djokovic sends Norrie for a rebound before finally volleying into the net. 0-15. Norrie pounces on a mistimed forehand to clear a forehand into the middle of the court. 15-15. A powerful first serve hits the line and Djokovic can’t control it. 30-15. Norrie is looking good now and has no problem seeing out the game at 15. Norrie 3-2 Djokovic* (* stands for server) Can Norrie put some pressure on Djokovic’s serve again? At 15-15 he certainly tries, firing a double backhand long as he tries to get past Djokovic. 30-15. With Djokovic struggling on his first serve, Norrie slows things down with his backhand straight. It works a treat with Djokovic ducking and finding the net. 30-30. And then Djokovic hits a weird backhand. Breakpoint. And what a point. Norry tries to stay on point, lowers his backhand again and watches Djokovic shoot high. He broke Djokovic again! Nori 2-2 Djokovic ( indicates server) What a point to start this game. Djokovic volleys into the net after a highly entertaining rally. 0-15 and Djokovic holds his hands up to accept the lavish appreciation of the Center crowd. A cross-court backhand is brilliantly placed by Norry to force Djokovic into a mistimed forehand into the net. 15-15. Then the Brit puts too much fuel into a forehand and it goes long. 15-30. He gets back to 30-30, hits a quick first serve that’s too hot for Djokovic to reach match point at 40-30, then drops another to hold. Solid. Novak Djokovic fires a pinch. Nori 1-1 Djokovic ( indicates server) So how will the British underdog serve? Not very well. Djokovic applies pressure at 15-15 and forces Norrie to miss to the left with a hard forehand. 15-30. A loose backhand gives Djokovic two break points. Norrie looks nervous and misses his first serve, then hits a forehand into the net. Djokovic breaks! Norrie 1-0 Djokovic* (* means server) Norrie breaks immediately! Djokovic starts rough. His first serve goes into the net, then he struggles with his toss and finally shoots for a lame second serve. Norrie takes control and overcomes Djokovic in the rally. 0-15. Norrie attacks another second serve and forces Djokovic into a forehand that rings wide. 0-30 and a huge ovation from Center Court. Djokovic fights back to 15-30 but then gives Norrie two break points. The Brit can’t make the first, but a fine backhand volley into the net means he doesn’t miss the second. The game has begun! So, we’re ready to go to Center Court. Djokovic serves first. Here you go! In the men’s wheelchair semi-final on Court 1, the score is 1-1 and on serve in the deciding set between Britain’s Alfie Hewett and Argentina’s Gustavo Fernandez.
