Updated: 16:26 July 13, 2022 More than a dozen fire crews have been called to a large fire at an industrial plant in Weeting near Brandon. Firefighters are currently tackling the blaze in Fengate Drove after being called just before 2pm today (July 13). Large clouds of smoke can be seen above the city. A Norfolk Police spokesman said: “We are assisting the fire at the scene and have closed the top end of the road.” A man who works at the industrial complex, but did not want to be named, said “the smoke is black”. Firefighters continue to attend the blaze and officers at the scene are diverting motorists using the main road out of it. Devices from Thetford, Beccles, Haverhill, Bury St Edmunds, Elmswell, Ixworth, Brandon and Newmarket are currently at the scene. A resident, who asked not to be named, said: “The factory has been completely destroyed, next to the harvest church. “I was told earlier by the police to stay indoors and we weren’t sure if chemicals were coming from it. “Debris falls in all our gardens. Fire crews at the scene of the fire. – Credit: Sarah Hussain “I saw it from my bedroom window, at first I heard some clicks and thought it was the steam rally, but I thought it was going to be a long time. “Then I looked about two hours ago and saw the flames and the black smoke. “There were so many fire engines I lost count. We have a fire hydrant right outside the church and we had seen them connected to it. “The water pressure in the house is low now. “I’ve never seen anything like it.” Another person, who wished to remain anonymous, whose daughter lives down the road, said: “It sounded like gunshots at first and then we saw the smoke.” UK electricity grids are also on the scene. The full extent of the incident is not yet known and it is not certain if anyone has been injured at this stage.
