The Biden administration and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are committed to confronting Russia’s war in Ukraine and the threat it poses to European security, and the funds committed so far in Kyiv already exceed the US cost of first five years in Afghanistan. The Biden administration on Friday announced another $400 million military withdrawal package to Ukraine as it tries to fend off Russian advances. The latest package has reportedly been tailored in coordination with Ukrainian officials for what is specifically needed on the front lines and comes days after Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed victory over the eastern Luhansk region. Heavy artillery such as howitzers and high-mobility artillery rocket systems (HIMARS) are among the major items Ukraine has said it needs to target Russian command-and-control hotspots behind the front lines. Earlier this year, Congress pledged to spend $54 billion in traditional foreign aid and military aid in a move to help curb Putin’s offensive. The funds will largely be distributed through traditional channels to support Ukraine, but will also provide support to NATO nations and US troops stationed in Europe. Most of the package will be distributed in the near future, probably by the end of the year.
