8:20 am — Flood warning for many areas until late morning after 2 to 4 inches of rain. more rain possible through this afternoon Many parts of the immediate DC area were drenched by 2 to 4 inches of rain overnight, causing flooding in areas. The rain has thinned out for now, but areas of light to moderate intensity may redevelop this morning and there may be another period of steady rain and even some integrated thunderstorms this afternoon into the evening. The rain now looks set to last longer than previously forecast. “Streams continue to rise due to excess runoff from previous rainfall,” the National Weather Service writes. A chance of another half inch to an inch of rain by this afternoon could make matters worse. The rainfall map below shows that a broad swath along and just west of Interstate 95 in Northern Virginia saw 2 to 4 inches of rain overnight. Reagan National Airport, which received about 4 inches, was close to the jackpot. Dulles Airport received 2.32 inches while BWI Marshall Airport recorded comparatively less, just 0.93 inches. The Met Office received about a dozen reports of flooding in the area overnight. Several streams overflowed, including parts of Rock Creek, flooding adjacent roads. Low-lying, poor drainage areas also experienced flooding, including portions of Interstate 295 that runs through the area and Interstate 395 that runs through Arlington and the District.

We are avoiding raindrops this morning and hope to miss significant flooding as much as possible. Rain chances are diminishing as time goes on today, leaving us dry by the evening, if not before. The rest of the forecasts are much better. At least, until we hit the heat on Tuesday. In the meantime, if you’re out today, be aware of the potential for high water. Turn around, don’t drown. Today (Saturday): Heavy rain continues early in the morning. Although it could be hit or miss, some areas could rise in a short period of time, leading to flooding. Showers may continue and continue into the afternoon, but the heaviest is likely to come early. Widespread rainfall totals of one to three inches seem a decent bet, with some spots getting more. It is on the cool side despite the fact that it remains rather hazy. Temperatures may only reach the low to mid 70s in the afternoon as winds blow out of the northeast. Gusts around 25 mph possible. Confidence: Moderate Tonight: A stray shower can be delayed. Otherwise, liquidation. We should trend towards mostly clear through the morning. Winds are light north and northeast.
