Round 1

In what appears to be a solid free fight card on paper, the UFC will show its featherweight on the ABC network in an early morning show for most of the United States. An early start time means an early finish, so fans and media alike can enjoy a Saturday night without a UFC show running into the wee hours of the morning. This dozen-fight showdown kicks off at the lightest division on the roster between two former Invicta FC champions. Former 105-pound queen Penne (14-5, 3-3 UFC), who is making her seventh UFC appearance since joining the league seven years ago, debuts and recently dropped 115-pound champion Ducote ( 11-6, 0-0 UFC). This potential “pass the torch” card opener will be officiated by referee Jacob Montalvo, and the ladies don’t bother touching gloves to start the day. Ducote tries to build her range early, with several descending jabs. Penne responds in kind as they stand right in front of each other and bang in the center of the cage, with neither woman giving much ground as she looks to settle things down. One bursts out with a jab to land, the other responds with another strike just as this exchange of shields continues. Ducote chains a low left hand kick and Penne’s eyes open a little wider after absorbing the blow. The newcomer chops the leg and aims another left hook to the bow, and Penne looks a little scarred already after just a few punches. Ducote is closing in on her opponent with jabs, and cutting Penn with a standing right, and Penn has had enough and runs forward for a draw. “Gordinha” pushes her aside and continues to work on Penne’s lead calf, which is quickly reddening. Penn comes in to set up a turnbuckle and ties together three knees to the body before ripping an elbow into the arc. Ducote kicks her away and keeps the leg attack going, and Penne tries to break it up by dragging Ducote into a brawl. This doesn’t work in her favor as Ducote’s hands are a bit quicker, catching Penne with some hooks on the inside. Penn gets shoved with a sharp kick to the chest and Ducote steps through it to hit Penn in the face with a left hand. Ducote lands a right to the body and a left to the head, and Penne bull rushes forward only to be pushed aside. Ducote’s leg kicks on the outside continue to damage Penne’s wheel as he is already red and swollen. Penn counters over the top and Douko stands firm and jabs her with a right hand. The round ends as both ladies drop hands.

Round 2

The second round begins with several quick exchanges between the two, and Penne starts fast but is outpowered as they trade blows. Ducote doesn’t stop kicking her opponent’s leg and Penne’s poker face fades as she absorbs those unanswered kicks. Ducote follows up with a right hand kick to the jaw, and splits the guard with a left hook as she slips a punch. Both load in powerful punches and Ducote’s arc is cleaner as it lands flush while Penne’s grazes the chin. Ducote lands two punches to the jaw and shakes them off so she can get Penne back, which leads Penne to a shot. When that doesn’t work, Penne looks to hold a clinch and Ducote isn’t getting stuck and peppered with knees like before. As they separate, Penn lands her jab, giving Ducote something to think about, and checks in with a leg kick as well. Ducote catches her with a right hand, and Penne grabs her and lands a knee. Penne continues her jab as Ducote takes her down, and this has the positive effect of keeping the newcomer at bay. Penne kicks the body when Ducote looks to low kick her and a left hand pops Ducote’s nose. Another takedown attempt is missed by Penne and Ducote makes her think twice with two hooks landing on either side of Penne’s uppercut. Punches from Penne keep the blood flowing from Ducote’s nose, and Ducote steels herself and moves in to attack. She hits Penne with four clean punches, knocking Penne back into the wall and causing Penne to raise her knee to hold her foe back. Ducote still catches up with a few more, and the horn goes off.

Round 3

While Penne looks to start the final round with effective distance fighting, using her jab as her most effective weapon, she can’t stop Ducote’s leg kicks. Calf kicks from the newcomer elicit visible reactions from Penne, and Penne is no longer able to hide the pain or maintain her full balance. This leads to Ducote missing more, and Penne lifts her leg and holds it up because she can’t keep her weight on it. Ducote counters a whistling right hand on Penne and Penne’s other knee wobbles from the damage. Penne throws kicks off that injured leg so she’s not a target for kicks, and Ducote continues to target that swollen calf. Ducote lands two more and slides out with a right. Penn sits with all her strength to counter with a right hook and doesn’t have enough momentum to earn Ducote’s respect. “Gordinha” comes forward and keeps Penne backing up, and mixes in punches to the body so that Penne doesn’t just focus on that particular strike. Penna bites her mouthpiece and throws hard, and her landing hands wash away. Ducote walks through what Penne wings her, and calmly hacks the leg in and out. Pene toughens it up and her right eye begins to swell from the left hands smashing into her cheek. Ducote is firmly in her groove and Penne valiantly tries to make her pay for any punches she lands. Ducote lands a right hand that lands level, and Penne is there to come back with reckless abandon. Ducote plants another to the chin, and strings a left hook into a low kick that draws a clear limp from Penne. The heart shown by Penne cannot be denied and she makes it to the final bell despite taking a lot of damage to her lead leg.
