Citing multiple sources, Detroit Free Press education reporter David Jessie reported that the UofM Board of Regents will officially hire Ono at its meeting Wednesday. There were no details on the contract, including when Ono will start or his salary. Ono was born in Vancouver but grew up in Philadelphia and Baltimore. He received a bachelor’s degree in biological science from the University of Chicago and a doctorate in experimental medicine from McGill University. Ono was named UBC’s 15th president in 2016. Prior to that, he was the 28th president of the University of Cincinnati and also served as Chair of Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, among many other leadership and academic positions in his 59-year-old fulfill. Founded in 1817, the University of Michigan is one of the top universities in the US with more than 65,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. UBC was founded in 1908 and has about the same number of students. Despite the fact that UM is nearly 100 years older than UBC, both universities have had the same number of presidents. Ono earned over $600,000 a year at UBC.
