Two people were taken to hospital Thursday afternoon after a rooftop car park partially collapsed at a commercial building on Lougheed Highway.

Firefighters, paramedics and police responded to 3434 Lougheed Highway around 3:45 p.m. after a piece of heavy equipment led to the partial collapse. A hole is visible that is about 12 meters by 12 meters. Vancouver Fire Chief Karen Fry tweeted that crews had pulled eight people from the rubble. The incident closed the Lougheed Highway between Rupert Street and Boundary Road, a major thoroughfare for traffic. Heavy equipment fell into the spaces below in the two-story building, which is built into the side of a steep hill. Cars can enter the rooftop car park directly from Lougheed.

About 30 firefighters rushed to the scene along with police, while EHS said four ground paramedic units responded. Emergency Health Services confirmed that two people were taken to hospital.
