Sgt Emily Joshi and PC Ozan Yelken are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday July 15 charged with common assault by beating. The charges relate to a man who was stopped on Wykeham Road in Hendon, north-west London, on December 28 last year. As it was understood, the incident is related to the man who was stopped and searched. In May, the Met received a complaint alleging excessive force had been used. The following month, the police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), passed a dossier of evidence to prosecutors, who approved the charges. In a statement, the force said the pair had been placed on restricted duties, which would be reviewed. He added that the Met’s Professional Standards Directorate was aware and issues of misconduct “will be looked into” once the criminal proceedings are completed. CH Supt Sara Leach said: “I know this allegation will, of course, be concerning. We fully supported the IOPC with its research. “As the criminal proceedings are now active, I cannot comment further as it is very important not to undermine or interfere with this case.”
