The Gulf disturbance has a 30 percent chance of becoming at least a tropical depression this week, the National Hurricane Center said in its 7 a.m. outlook. If the system strengthens into a tropical storm, the next available name is Danielle. Showers and thunderstorms will be possible throughout the week in southern Louisiana from the system, National Weather Service forecasters in Slidell said. Rainfall rates may be more than 2 inches per hour.

How much rain?

The heaviest rainfall is expected on the coasts. Generally, 2 to 6 inches of rain is expected through Sunday south of the I-10/I-12 corridor, but forecasters said some places could see higher amounts. Rain totals through Sunday could reach 8 inches in places like Boothville. Heavy rainfall is expected in southern Louisiana from a disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico. Gradual development of the system is possible if it remains offshore, forecasters said.
