TREY GOWDY: President Biden just got back from the Middle East and there was no shortage of issues to deal with. Natural gas prices are crippling American consumers, so OPEC’s increased production no doubt appeared, which also raises a tough political issue for the president. Why are US energy producers being ostracized while OPEC is being asked to do more? And that was arguably not the toughest issue facing the president in Saudi Arabia, the toughest issue may have been navigating America’s need for Saudi Arabia as an ally against Iran while also discovering the reality that the intelligence community leads us to believe that Saudi Arabia ordered the assassination and subsequent dismemberment of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi. And then there’s Iran, for reasons I don’t fully understand, talking to Saudi Arabia is wrong in the eyes of some in that country, while negotiating with Iran is fine. This is the same Iran, of course, that sides with Russia, supplies terrorist groups around the world, and, incidentally, wants to assassinate current or former US government officials in retaliation for the assassination of one of their generals who happened to be terrorist. Israel is surrounded by countries that either currently or previously have denied their existence. Some of Israel’s neighbors have vowed to wipe Israel off the map. There are economic issues, security issues, energy issues, and there is also an obligation to stand up for something morally, such as not killing members of the press. It’s a tough job, which is why so few of us put our hands up and volunteer for it. But when you raise your hand and say “choose me to be the leader of the free world,” you can expect some scrutiny.
