An old picture of teenagers jumping in the quarry at Appley Bridge A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “His next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this time. “The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be sent to the coroner in due course.” Would-be swimmers have previously been warned by police that the temperature change of jumping into cold water when the body is warm can trigger a breathing response, causing someone to suffocate within seconds of the plunge. The area has had its share of tragedies over the years. In 2015, 13-year-old Marsh Green pupil Miracle Godson died after getting into difficulties while swimming at East Quarry. Craig Croston also died there aged 17 in 1999. Local residents have been campaigning for the closure of East Quarry for many years. The Environment Agency had received an application to remove the water from the site in 2020, however there has been no update. However, the plan to drain water from the quarry has attracted strong opposition from some residents. They fear that removing the water will simply replace one problem at the quarry with another, with the dry area becoming a magnet for activities such as off-road cycling.
