There are sure to be more fireworks as the Tour de France continues on Bastille Day and the race reaches the iconic Alpe d’Huez climb after a thrilling battle in the mountains on Wednesday. In an excellent day of tactics and intensity, Jonas Vingegaard stormed into the race lead and took the yellow jersey as defending champion Tadej Pogacar broke on the final climb to the Col du Granon. It came after Vingegaard and Team Jumbo-Visma isolated Pogacar and brought him down after a series of attacks, with last year’s runner-up Vingegaard holding a huge lead of over two minutes in the general classification. However, the riders face another huge test in Stage 12, and another grueling day of climbing. Before reaching Alpe d’Huez, they will have to tackle the Col du Galibier for the second time in two days and then climb the surprisingly long Col de la Croix de Fer. The home crowds will be cheering for a French winner on Bastille Day, but this match calls for no more intrigue as Pogacar looks to respond to Vingegaard’s stunning strike. 144 kilometers to go: Giulio Ciccone of Trek–Segafredo decided to make an attempt to catch the breakawat. Over 20km of today’s route covered, 12km to go to the top of the Col du Galibier. It’s a tough old climb to say the least. Michael Jones July 14, 2022 12:55 p.m 1657799396

Tour de France 2022: Stage 12
147km to go: There are a few splits in the peloton. Some of the Ineos Grenadiers riders are moving forward, including Tom Pidcock. It’s an early attacking move that doesn’t spark a response from Jonas Vingegaard in the yellow shirt. The breakaway is just one minute and 15 seconds ahead now as these attacks continue to be fired from the peloton which is increasing its pace. Just over 15 kilometers to go to the top of the Col du Galibier. Michael Jones July 14, 2022 12:46 p.m 1657798889

153km to go: The top six have passed the Col de Lautaret and are on the Col de Galibier climb. It is long at 23 kilometers with a gradient of 5.1% Kobe Goossens crosses the line first to claim the maximum 20 points in the intermediate sprint. The gap is now two minutes between them and the peloton, but Wout van Aert is loving it. He starts a chase from the front of the peloton, probably just to claim some points from the sprint. 158km to go: Nielsen Powless still leads but there are two teams chasing after him. Towards the back of the peloton there is a minor clash with Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl’s Yves Lampaert. It’s nothing too serious and the riders quickly get back on their bikes. Michael Jones 14 July 2022 12:27 1657797801
Tour de France 2022: Stage 12
161km to go: The first notable marker on today’s route is the intermediate sprint at the base of the Col du Galibier about 12km from the start. Le Monêtier-les-Bains hosted an impromptu start of a route to Sestrières in 1996 due to the storm at the top of the Galibier and is the location of today’s sprint. Michael Jones 14 July 2022 12:23
