Now, it will take a lot of work to stay the weekend. After a dismal first-round 78, Woods must go low in the second round to have any chance of making the cut at St. Andrews. Here’s how his morning goes at the Old Course. That’s what Woods will face on Friday. He’ll need to figure it out and post something in the 60s if he wants to see Saturday and Sunday in Scotland. No. 1: Par 4, 375 yards

The first hole at St. Andrews is much easier when the initial tee shot does not land on a new split. Woods’ tee shot on Thursday found a flare, his second fell into the burn and left a terrific double bogey. No sharing on Friday, and things went much more smoothly. A safe approach to the green and better bike speed resulted in a seamless par. Rating: Fri Total for the day: Libra Total for the tournament: 6 overs

No. 2: Par 4, 452 yards

Woods, walking with hands in pockets and shoulders hunched, appears to be catching a cold on a cold Scottish morning. Early in his round, however, his swing appears free. A steady drive and a controlled iron approach gave him a good chance at birdie. But the 20-footer fell out. Some of them — a lot of them — will have to come in if Woods is to make the cut. Rating: Fri Total for the day: Libra Total for the tournament: 6 overs

No. 3: Par 4, 398 yards

Even though he was just 101 yards for his second shot, Woods wasn’t messing around with a front left, tight pin at the third. He played short of the hole and faced a 25-foot birdie putt. The athlete, who gave him all kinds of problems on Thursday, is working on Friday so far. He made the putt to get into the red for the day. No. 4: Par 4, 480 yards

Woods hated his second shot. How do we know? Well, he hit his cane on the ground while the approach was still in the air. It wouldn’t be the last time he got upset in the hole. A solid putt from the green left him a short three-footer for par. He missed it. Score: Bogey Total for the day: Libra Total for the tournament: 6 overs

No. 5: Par 5, 570 yards

Woods hit a towering 3-wood onto the green. The ball settled about 6 feet from the pin. One problem: It was the wrong pin. The fifth is one of the double greens on the Old Course. It shares with the 13th. So Woods’ ball hit the green and went on. When he finally stopped, he was 7 feet short of the 13th hole but 117 feet short of the fifth. The ridiculously long airball came 10 feet close. The most manageable birdie just missed on the left side. No. 6: Par 4, 414 yards

Woods moved well with his right leg, which was surgically repaired during his time in Scotland. But a grimace and the most pronounced limp of the week occurred when his odd shot ended up in one of the many bunkers. He had no chance of getting to the green and simply putted. By the time it was all over, he put another bogey on the scoreboard. Score: Bogey Total for the day: 1 up Total for the tournament: 7 overs

No. 7: Par 4, 371 yards

Woods was relieved of the jacket, the rain letting up after a dreary morning. His game, however, did not shine. He had just 97 yards left for his second shot, but hit the wedge on the wrong side of the slope to leave a birdie longer than he wanted. Rating: Fri Total for the day: 1 up Total for the tournament: 7 overs

No. 8: Par 3, 187 yards

For perhaps the first time ever, Woods played a routine, boring hole. He found the middle of the green. I narrowly missed a 30-footer for birdie. A ho-hum par. Rating: Fri Total for the day: 1 up Total for the tournament: 7 overs

No. 9: Par 4, 352 yards

There was plenty of standing around the tee as the game was backed up. Woods fairway settled just short and right of the green. Then the problem that plagued him in the first 27 holes of this major championship reappeared. Woods struggled to judge speed when putting or playing shots from the green. His effort in the ninth came up woefully short. Instead of a birdie putt, he had another 25-footer — which he missed. Rating: Fri Total for the day: 1 up Total for the tournament: 7 overs

No. 10: Par 4, 386 yards

Woods began what will likely be his last nine holes of competitive golf for a while with a routine par. Fairway hit. Center of the green. Drama-free bipeds. Rating: Fri Total for the day: 1 up Total for the tournament: 7 overs

No. 11: Par 3, 174 yards

Woods was careful with his approach shots for most of his second round. He looked content to aim for the center of the green. Well, he went flag hunting in 11th. But the tee fell short and landed in the big bunker. Woods, however, launched it to 12 feet and made the putt at an incredible level. Rating: Fri Total for the day: 1 up Total for the tournament: 7 overs

No. 13: Par 4, 465 yards

Woods just can’t figure out green speeds. His second shot to the green took a huge bounce, leaving him a 40-footer for birdie. Once again, he gave up the hit, just barely. He made the 6-footer for par, but it was, again, a lot more work than it should have been. Rating: Fri Total for the day: 1 up Total for the tournament: 7 overs

No. 14: Par 5, 614 yards

Normally, Woods would probably feel good about a 370-yard drive, even if it ended up in the hay beside the fairway. That is, until he compared it to what he did the day before, when he hit one 412 yards. On Friday, his second shot found another of St. John’s famous shelters. Andrews. He turned that 412-yard drive Thursday into a birdie. He couldn’t match his 370-yard burst on Friday. Rating: Fri Total for the day: 1 up Total for the tournament: 7 overs

No. 15: Par 4, 455 yards

Another hole, another long birdie. That came after Woods missed a short approach wedge past the hole. He almost holed the 77-footer, but came up a roll or two short. Rating: Fri Total for the day: 1 up Total for the tournament: 7 overs

No. 16: Par 4, 418 yards

The good news? Woods’ error on the 16th green missed the green but didn’t go into a putt. The bad news? The chip shot did it. A blast out and another miss resulted in an ugly double. Score: Double Dad Total for the day: 3 up Total for the tournament: 9 overs
