The man walked into the Greenwood Park Mall and began shooting, fatally wounding three people before he was eventually killed by a 22-year-old armed bystander, police said. One of the injured was a 12-year-old girl who suffered minor injuries, the Indianapolis Star reported. Indiana has some of the loosest gun laws among US states, and just this month it dropped the requirement for those who want to carry a handgun to need a permit — even if it’s concealed. This latest shooting means another community will be rocked by tragedy, following similar attacks at a school in Uvalde, Texas, and at an Independence Day parade in Chicago. “We’re sick of another type of incident like this in our country,” said Indianapolis Police Assistant Chief Chris Bailey. Meanwhile, Greenwood Police Chief Jim Eason said, “The real hero of the day is the citizen who was legally carrying a gun in that food court and was able to stop the shooter almost as soon as he started.” Image: Law enforcement waits outside after fatal shooting. Officers went to the mall at around 6pm local time after an alarm was raised. Authorities were searching the mall for other victims, but the shooting was believed to be confined to the food court. U.S. Sen. Todd Young, a Republican from Indiana, tweeted: “Terrible news tonight in my county. Praying for the victims of the Greenwood Park Mall shooting. “Thank you to our officers who responded.” The latest shootings in America follow headline-grabbing tragedies in Chicago and Uvalde, Texas, as well as countless others that have gone unreported. Greenwood is a southern suburb of Indianapolis with a population of approximately 60,000. Mayor Mark Myers asked for “prayers for the victims and our first responders.” “This tragedy strikes at the core of our community,” he added in a statement.
