Peter and Paula Closier feared the worst when Bonnie, their five-year-old beagle-cross, escaped from their home in West Sussex on Sunday morning. Mrs Closier, 48, had called the police, vets and a dog warden in a frantic attempt to find her. Little did they know that John Wilmer had spotted the pet on the side of the road just minutes after it escaped as he was taking his two dogs to a show in Fellbridge, Surrey. The family’s fears were allayed when Paula spotted a Facebook post by John asking the dog’s owner to get in touch. Once he heard what the owners had said, Mr Wilmer decided to enter Bonnie in the competition for the best rescue dog – and the animal came back with a third place rosette.
