The city of St. John’s is working hard to avoid what the city of Mt. Pearl is going through. The St. John’s is in various stages of negotiations with half a dozen local unions whose contracts have expired. Asked how those talks are going, St. John Mayor Danny Breen declined to negotiate publicly, saying it wouldn’t be appropriate. He says they are working with unions to reach agreements through ongoing discussions. Mount Pearl is in the midst of a municipal workers’ strike centered on equal benefits for new hires. It led to the closure of the Summit and Glacier facilities, leading to a growing list of canceled programs.
