Police were first notified of the incident around 9 p.m. when emergency personnel were dispatched to the area for a report of multiple stabbings, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Wednesday afternoon. Police allege the incident began when the teenager broke into a home near the shopping center on Lorette Avenue. The man who owns the property and another man then chased the teenager as he took off, police said. As the teenager ran away, he allegedly attacked and stabbed an 84-year-old woman who stepped into the street, Const. Claude Chancy said Wednesday morning. He was found with stab wounds at the intersection of Thurso Street and Lorette Avenue, police said in a statement. An 84-year-old woman believed to have been stabbed by the teenager was found injured near the shopping center at the intersection of Thurso Street and Lorette Avenue, police said. (Tyson Koschik/CBC) The two men, aged 43 and 46, then grabbed the boy in the mall parking lot – but as they held him down, the teenager also stabbed the men, Chancey said. A nurse who happened to be at the scene as it unfolded provided emergency care to the men until an ambulance arrived, she said later in an email. Officers from the northern, western and central districts and the police helicopter helped locate the stabbing victims, the police service’s press release said. The young man was taken to hospital in unstable condition and has since been upgraded to stable. The elderly man was treated at the scene. The woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where she required surgery, Chancy said. He was still at the hospital Wednesday afternoon, the police news release said. Police said the victims and the teenager did not know each other before the attacks. The teenager is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a weapon and mischief under $5,000. He is also charged with assault with a weapon and breaking and entering with intent, police said. The incident comes just days after a woman in her 20s was robbed in the same Grant Park parking lot. She later had to jump out of her moving vehicle to escape the assailant in that incident, police said.

Patios, staff “willing to jump in and help”: witness

Mackenzie Kolton was finishing up after dinner on the patio at Fionn MacCool’s when chaos broke out in the nearby parking lot. But it would be a while before anyone realized there had been a stabbing, she said — when she first looked outside, it was a truck zooming toward where she was sitting that caught her eye. “A lot of people sitting on the patio got up and ran from their tables because the car was going, if it didn’t stop, straight into the patio,” Colton said, adding that when the vehicle stopped she knew someone was underneath it. “At first I thought the biggest problem was a person who was just run over by a car. And that’s what people were screaming at first, is he under the car… I didn’t see immediately if the person was hit. But I know someone he was under a car for several minutes.” He said restaurant staff ran inside to call 911 as people went to check on the injured man. By then Colton said she saw someone bleeding and learned it had been a stabbing. Mackenzie Kolton says she was finishing up after dinner on the patio at Fionn MacCool’s when chaos broke out in the nearby parking lot Tuesday night. (Tyson Koschik/CBC) He said he watched as a nurse who happened to be on the patio put on a pair of gloves and began tending to the stab victim, sitting him outside the restaurant as they applied pressure and water to any wounds. “Props to the staff and everyone for jumping in. I know these meetings can be really scary and I think sometimes there’s a concern of obviously personal safety and not wanting to get involved,” Colton said. “But both the people sitting on the patio and the staff were willing to jump in and help and make sure everyone got medical attention and stayed calm.” Chancy confirmed that a nurse provided emergency care to the man until an ambulance arrived. Once police arrived, Colton said she watched officers pull the teenager out from under the truck where people were holding him and lead him away in handcuffs. She said it was still unclear to her who was driving the truck and if they were connected to any of the men who chased the teenager. Police spokesman Const. Dani McKinnon said later Wednesday that the teenager was not taken to hospital while in custody, although she said she had “no definitive information as to whether or not he was injured during the incident”. He would not comment further.

The mall is beefing up security

The incident comes just days after a woman in her 20s was robbed in the same Grant Park parking lot. She later had to jump out of her moving vehicle to escape the assailant in that incident, police said. Graham Bialek, general manager of Grant Park Shopping Centre, said the mall is aware of recent incidents in its parking lot and has increased security presence outside the building in response. Police said the victims and the teenager did not know each other before the stabbings. The teenager is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a weapon and mischief under $5,000. He is also charged with assault with a weapon and breaking and entering with intent, police said.
