ShutDownDC is promising a $50 bonus to anyone who provides a “confirmed sighting” of Supreme Court Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett or John Roberts in any public DC venue, raising the amount to $200 if they stick around at that location for half an hour. Last month, the Court ruled 6-3 to uphold a challenge to Mississippi’s abortion ban and 5-4 to overturn Roe v. Wade, a long-standing ruling that generally protected the freedom to choose abortion. Alito’s majority opinion was joined by conservative Justices Thomas, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Coney Barrett. Justices Thomas and Kavanaugh filed concurring opinions. Since then there have been protests outside the judges’ houses, with some public confrontations. The latest effort to offer bonuses raises the stakes. “DC service industry workers… If you see Kavanaugh, Alito, Thomas, Gorsuch, Coney Barrett or Roberts DM us with the details!” said a Twitter post from ShutDownDC. “We’ll Venmo you $50 for a confirmed view and $200 if it’s still there 30 minutes after your message.”
