Ms. Braverman, the attorney general, was kicked out of the contest on Thursday after winning the fewest votes in a second vote by lawmakers. In a statement she said: “I am truly grateful to everyone who supported me in the leadership election. We must unite as a party and fulfill the manifesto. “Liz is the best person to unlock the opportunities of Brexit and deliver much-needed tax cuts. “I’m sure he will stand up for free speech, stand up for equal opportunity and take a strong line on illegal immigration. “It’s what the British people expect.” Kemi Badenoch, another leadership challenger, said she was “disappointed” Ms Braverman would back Ms Truss. Ms Badenoch told LBC: “Suella and I are friends, I’m friends with Tom Tugendhat and Rishi and Liz were my senior ministers so it’s all very close to home. “We’re all friends, so every time someone supports one person, there’s another person who gets let down. But I’m in it to win it. “I know people want to support the person they think is most likely to give them a job or who has been there the longest – that’s the easy thing. The hard thing to do is take a risk and try something different.”
