Confirmed cases of monkeypox and orthopoxvirus in the US have exceeded 1,000. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are now 1,053 cases in 41 states and Puerto Rico. Three states have more than 150 confirmed monkeypox cases, including California, New York and Illinois. Figures from the organization show that cases worldwide now exceed 11,000. This comes ahead of a WHO emergency committee meeting later this month to review trends, countermeasures and make recommendations to countries and communities about the virus outbreak.
