Evans on Saturday responded to a tweet from The Hollywood Reporter about “Captain America 4,” which read, “It is unclear if Chris Evans would reprise his role as the first Captain America.” Evans’ response: “Sam Wilson is Captain America.” Either Evans’ Twitter game is strong or he’s trolling. We tend to think the latter because why spoil a huge surprise? When it was first reported in 2021 that he was in talks to return as the First Avenger, he reacted similarly, tweeting “news to me.” Also Read: ‘Captain America 4’: Marvel Studios Taps Julius Onah To Direct Evans’ return is unlikely to be a new installment of “Captain America,” but rather an appearance in an untitled Marvel project with a second film option. When we last saw Captain America in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” Steve Rogers traveled back to 1945 to live his life in peace with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) before reappearing in the present as an old man. According to the rules of time travel established by “Avengers: Endgame”, Captain America returning to the past would create a different timeline and no longer be part of the movie universe. This means that in order to return to the current “Endgame” timeline, he would have to use his time travel device. But since he was just hanging out on a bench, the film seemed to imply that he was just living his life and showed up at the right time. He certainly doesn’t appear to be wearing the time travel device in that scene. Either way, if Steve Rogers has a future in the MCU, Evans isn’t saying so on Twitter.

Some new news broke yesterday regarding Marvel’s fourth Captain America film, namely the announcement that The Cloverfield Paradox’s Julius Onah had signed on to direct Anthony Mackie’s first full-length film in the title role. Mackie’s rise to the role of Captain America, created in Avengers: Endgame, then played out, explored, and ultimately cemented in Disney+’s Falcon And The Winter Soldier, is a subtle thing about the MCU and telling — the first time ( give or take a little Norton-Ruffalo switcheroo and some slight Black Widow swapping) that the big franchise tried to put a “new” character in a key Avengers role. But please make no mistake, MCU fans: Sam Wilson is Captain America – something former Cap Chris Evans felt moved to remind doubters in no uncertain terms today. Specifically, Evans followed a Twitter thread from The Hollywood Reporter that described very strange language in its coverage of Onah’s hiring that seemed strangely reticent to refer to Mackie’s Sam Wilson as Captain America, and which openly questioned whether Evans could return to the franchise for Cap 4 — arguing that “Having a stacked cast in solo outings is a staple of Marvel at this point.” (There’s also a bit about whether the new movie will dive into “the question of who is entitled to bear the shield,” which, seriously: We just had an entire TV show about that.) Anyway, Evans was having none of it. “Sam Wilson is Captain America,” he clearly said in response to the thread. (Which was then disputed by a bunch of commenters who hailed him as the one true Cap, etc., etc., but hey, online fans will admire, dumbly, sometimes.) And while we’ll admit that the Marvel stars sometimes lie as part of the company’s famous veil of secrecy, it seems highly unlikely that Evans is being anything but honest here – this is Mackie’s show now and Evans seems more than happy to let him have the spotlight publicity and let Steve Rogers rest.
