Robert Hattersley, 13, of Crawcrook, Gateshead, died after an incident on the river near Ovingham in Northumberland on Sunday afternoon. Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 4.15pm.
Investigations were carried out by a number of agencies including the police, Tyne & Wear Fire & Rescue Service, Northumberland Fire & Rescue Service, HM Coastguard and Mountain Rescue. Robert’s body was later found in the water and sadly he was pronounced dead at the scene. In a statement, they said: “Words are impossible to describe the heartbreak we feel – Robert was so kind and loving. We are absolutely devastated by what has happened. “He brought a smile to many people’s faces and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. We would like to thank all the emergency services who worked so hard to find Robert, as well as everyone who has been in contact with him their condolence messages”. Officers are continuing to support Robert’s family and have asked that their privacy be respected at this time. Detective Chief Inspector Martin Brooks, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is an absolutely tragic incident and our thoughts are with Robert’s family at this absolutely horrific time. We will continue to support them in any way we can as they try to process the events of the last 24 hours. “I would like to thank every organization that helped us in our searches, including all the volunteers. Your support is absolutely vital and greatly appreciated. It is with great regret that we could not provide a more positive update.” Chronicle Live previously reported how officers received a report of concern for the welfare of a male who had been in trouble on the river near Ovingham.
