The RCMP has released some sobering and shocking statistics about the increase in fatal collisions in Newfoundland and Labrador. The number of collisions in the RCMP’s jurisdiction between April 1 and June 30 of this year has more than doubled since the same period last year, and the number of fatalities has tripled. The RCMP responded to a total of 12 incidents resulting in the loss of 16 lives during this three month period. Five people died in clashes during the same period in 2021. Police say factors that contributed to the fatalities were impaired driving, aggressive driving and distracted driving, as well as failure to wear seat belts and helmets. RCMP are warning that single-vehicle and multi-vehicle crashes, mostly crossing the center line, are happening across the province, at all hours of the day and involving all ages.
