Conny Rohr of Maple Heart Ranch, south of Lake Shawnigan, says the hairless baby – named “Precious” – was born on Friday, April 29th. “We thought she would not survive because her mom did not take care of her,” Rohr said. “But we tried anyway, as he seemed to have a very strong survival instinct.” A veterinarian who examined the animal told Rohr that he had never heard of a goat being born without hair. A similar birth was recently recorded in Turkey, but Rohr said she could not find any other cases. Rohr and her family are left trying to figure out how to care for Precious. “We took her home, fed her with a bottle and made sure she was warm. “This sounds simple, but not if you have to turn on the generator to get electricity or keep the fire burning to keep the house warm,” he said. And because of her unique condition, Precious will not be able to stay out with other goats and will need to have a special shelter or addition at home, as well as clothes and special creams to protect her from the elements.
