THE CANADIAN PRESS/Chad Ippolito The British Columbia government has confirmed that Queen Charlotte’s village on Haida Gwaii will be renamed after its former ancestral name. The village council tabled a motion to revert to the name Daajing Giids, pronounced DAW’-jing-GEEDS’, after nearly half of residents approved the change, prompting a unanimous vote by councillors. Municipal Affairs Minister Nathan Cullen says in a release that place names matter and commends the council for working with the Haida Nation to advance an important act of reconciliation. Village Mayor Chris Olsen says the name change was a gift and an opportunity to make things right and show respect to the Haida Nation. He says the council has taken responsibility and got on the right side of a historic moment. Olsen said Daajing Giids means Village of Common Hats or a functional Haida hat.
