“What a relief,” the dog’s owner Jan Duffy told CTV News Toronto Saturday afternoon.
After Duffy and her family members posted their missing puppy, Blue, on social media, a stranger responded saying a dog had been found at a shelter.
When Duffy and her husband Mike Kinnear called the shelter, their description of Blue matched the puppy, and they rushed to get Blue, a Boston Terrier with a black body, white face and spotted ears.
While Duffy said the shelter told them the person who dropped off the dog said he found a stray and was trying to help, the owners believe otherwise.
“We are convinced that he was not a good Samaritan,” he said. “You don’t keep a dog between 6pm and today.”
Their suspicion is also based on their neighbor’s surveillance camera footage, which captured the incident with Blue.
In the video, which was taken shortly before 6 p.m. on Friday, a dark-colored car is seen passing a few doors from their neighbor’s home on Homestead Street, before slamming on the brakes and reversing into the house. The driver is then seen opening his window.
“You can see him yelling out the window,” Kinnear said.
After a few moments, the dog runs towards the car and the driver quickly opens his door, picks up the dog and places him in the passenger seat before closing the door and taking off.
“He usually never leaves the backyard,” Kinnear said. But in this case, the puppy wandered into their neighbor’s front yard four doors down.
“You know how puppies are, they’ll go for anybody,” Duffy said.
During Blue’s disappearance, Bo’s brother, also owned by Duffy and Kinnear, felt his brother’s absence, the owners say.
“He’s not doing anything,” Duffy said Saturday morning, before Blue was found. “He knows his brother is missing.”
Toronto police confirmed they attended the scene of a dog being stolen at Morningside and Lawrence avenues on Friday shortly before 11 p.m. At this time, police said the events are under investigation.
Meanwhile, Blue’s owners are grateful for the reunion this afternoon after the “devastating” and “shocking” events.
“I’m so grateful,” Duffy said.
