The province has released a plan to aid efforts to restore species at risk in some unique habitats. Newfoundland and Labrador are home to a number of species unique to the Limestone Barrens, ten of which are listed as Endangered. The ‘Limestone Species at Risk Recovery Plan’ is a guide to help protect the plant species found on the Great Northern and Port au Port peninsulas. Three of the species, which are highly specialized and adapted to limestone fields, are found only in the Northern Peninsula. Meanwhile, another management plan has been released for Water Pygmyweed, a small herbaceous plant known to occur only in the southern Avalon and Burin Peninsulas.
