Prime Minister Justin Trudeau landed in Calgary on Sunday to take part in the Stampede, attending the event for the first time since 2019. Trudeau joined lone Calgary MP George Sahal at a pancake breakfast at the Genesis Center in northeast Calgary this morning, wowing the crowd of about 200 people. Chahal, the former councillor, greeted Trudeau with a big “Yahoo” welcoming the outburst. “This is a time to come together and celebrate being able to come together once again. It’s great to see everyone in person. Good riot,” the prime minister said in a brief address to the crowd. “We’ve had two tough years where people have had to come together and get it done. And we really saw the power of community, Canadians leaning on each other, being there for each other — that’s what it’s all about.”

Trudeau flipped pancakes and mingled with the crowd for about 30 minutes before heading out to the Stampede around 10:30am. along with Tourism Minister Randy Boissonnault. He was also scheduled to attend a Liberal Party fundraiser in the evening. “I wasn’t expecting Justin Trudeau at all,” said Melvin Lopez, who attended the breakfast with his family. “Very good surprise. My father-in-law is visiting us from India and is a big fan of Justin Trudeau… He is with me here today and is very happy to see him here in person.” A man was escorted by police from the premises after shouting “Trudeau is a traitor” as the prime minister took the microphone to address the crowd. At the Stampede, Trudeau met with the Stampede veterinarian and some students researching animal safety. They walked along the horses in the pens behind the grandstand on the field as they talked. He then met with Mayor Jyoti Gondek, who welcomed him to Calgary.

Trudeau also went to one of the barns and chatted with some serious horse owners before walking through the crowds on the grounds, where many young families were in attendance. Some onlookers stopped the prime minister as he walked down the middle of the street, asking for selfies as he talked about how great it was to be back at the event. Others, including refugees from Ukraine, Syria and Afghanistan, thanked him. A Calgary woman thanked him for helping save her home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
