The incident occurred around 10 am when a passer-by intervened in a fight between a man and a woman. When the bystander tried to separate the two, the man pulled out a knife and stabbed him, the Ottawa Police Service said. The bystander had serious, but non-life threatening injuries. Wanted is 21-year-old Jaycob Mainville. Police released a photo of Mainville and said that while the fight was an isolated incident, Mainville should be considered armed and dangerous. Police blocked Mackenzie Avenue at Murray Street and the westbound lanes of Rideau Street between Sussex Drive and the Château Laurier entrance while they investigated. Yellow crime scene tape cordoned off the area, while discarded medical equipment littered the pavement just outside the hotel. The road reopened to traffic around noon.
