Residents and Parks Canada staff had their first sighting of the resident pagouri last Saturday. After days of trying to capture the peacock, Parks Canada made the “difficult decision” to euthanize it on Thursday. “The introduction of non-native species or pets has serious consequences for the natural environment of national parks and is prohibited under Canada’s national parks pet regulations,” Parks Canada explained in a statement. “In this case, the risk of the bird introducing disease and parasites to other natural wildlife in the park was too great to allow the bird to remain in the landscape.” Parks Canada said euthanasia was a “last resort.”
