A player can become an unrestricted free agent if he is over the age of 27 or has played in the league for seven years. Anyone who does not meet these criteria is considered a pending restricted free agent, where teams have more rights to retain a player should their contract expire. However, if a team does not extend a qualifying offer to their pending RFAs, they lose their negotiating rights and the player becomes a UFA. A suitable offer must be at least: • 110 percent of the player’s base salary from the previous season if he makes under $650,000 • 105 percent if the player makes between $650,000 and $1 million • 100 percent if the player makes more than $1 million On Monday, several players did not receive qualifying offers before the 5 p.m. deadline.
