According to Kelly on Tuesday night, this was much ado about nothing because the former president likely just “called” this person. At the end of Tuesday’s explosive hearing on January 6, committee Vice Chair Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) revealed that the twice-impeached former president tried to contact the unidentified witness — who has yet to publicly testify — after the committee’s June 28 hearing. The witness did not accept the call and instead referred it to their lawyer, who then contacted the committee. Cheney then added that the committee referred the matter to the Justice Department. “We will take any attempt to influence testimony very seriously,” he said. Kelly, predictably, broke up the hearings on his primetime show, hiding the “bombshell” that Cheney dropped about the former commander-in-chief’s possible witness tampering efforts. “Are you ready for this? Apparently, Donald Trump made a phone call and no one answered it,” exclaimed the cartoonishly pro-Trump host. “But they’re acting like it’s a big deal.” Kelly quipped that the “joke committee” has “no power” and then was mortified that Trump often bashes him. “By the way, not to name names, but I’ve gotten a call from the president on more than one occasion, and you can’t really tell he’s calling,” he argued. “He has some system you don’t know about.” But even if it was Trump who tried to call the witness, Kelly insisted, it was more likely just an innocent accident. “How do you know the president actually called him? And they didn’t answer,” he said, holding up his smartphone. “Hey, maybe it was a dial, huh? Tell that to the Ministry of Justice.”
