I’m not Catholic, but I still like to go to churches to offer one, light a candle, do all those things. I’m definitely one of the only people in my family who would ever go to church. I got involved in politics at a young age. It’s not like I was 10 recording Question Time on VHS. It was more the music I was listening to. I liked the two-tone – politics by way of Linton Kwesi Johnson. I was a little on the left, but with more passion than rigor, more into t-shirts and badges than trying to think of a transport policy. I’d been playing squash since I was nine and had a real natural ability, so I assumed I’d be a squash player, but then I got away with it. I was worried that 14 was old enough to not know what I wanted to do. 50 seems pretty serious. There is no way around it. Has grown up. I can’t believe how old I am. In my mind I’m still 14 or 16. So it’s always a bit of a shock when you see the numbers add up or a picture that isn’t flattering. But it is much better than the alternative. I’ll take it. I used to look in the mirror a lot since I was a kid. I just find it fascinating. It’s not because I think I’m gorgeous. Sometimes I look and think, “I’m looking right. That seems okay.” Then other days I think, “Jesus Christ, what happened there?” The dream was that people called me more than one thing on the street. There was a moment when I thought, “Shit. Will I be Tim from The Office by the time I’m 60?’ I don’t think I’ve ever been called Bilbo or John Watson. I don’t objectively think I’m horrible, but because I became known to the public for a certain show, I guess I always want to prepare people to be disappointed if you think that’s all you’re going to get. I reserve the right to be difficult if people expect me to be nice and cuddly. Working in America, I didn’t want to be the Englishman who couldn’t drive. They wouldn’t find it charming. They would find it a disease. So I learned in a week, then a week later I was driving on the wrong side of the road in the snow in Canada. I’m crying; I will tear up seeing or hearing something. It’s rarer that I do and cry a lot. But drowning is quite common. I have real friends, some of whom may be famous. I’m friendly with people who are creative because I guess I know more creative people than I know accountants. Although my accountant is pretty creative. No, don’t write that, Jesus Christ!
