Citing “quality of life” concerns, Sorrento Mayor Massimo Coppola announced on July 6 that costumed residents and visitors to the city center would face fines ranging from 25 to 500 euros (about $30 to $650). “Stop the inappropriate behavior,” Coppola wrote in a statement. “That’s why I signed the decree banning people from going around bare-chested as well as in bathing suits.”

Sorrento is a popular destination just south of Naples on Italy’s Amalfi Coast, making it a hotspot for sailors and boaters. But Coppola can’t bear to see any more bare chests in his picturesque town. Sorrento is perched atop dramatic cliffs on the Sorrento Peninsula that overlook beautiful ocean views. The city has a historic city center that is home to a web of winding alleys that helped the area to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. The town of just over 16,000 has become so popular with visitors that local authorities have had to introduce new driving rules to combat traffic through the peninsula, CNN reports.

From June 15, cars with even number plates can use the roads between Vietri sul Mare and Positano on even dates and cars with odd number plates can drive on odd dates. Rules apply between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. at particularly busy travel times: in August, weekends from 15 June to 30 September and around Easter, from 24 April to 2 May.
