Oyama Boat Launch at Lake Wood, UPDATE 3:45 p.m The man who drowned was trying to help another person in the water. Kelowna RCMP said officers from the Lake Country and Kelowna detachments responded to a 911 call to Wood Lake at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday’s. The preliminary investigation indicates that the man who died was trying to help another person in the water. According to accounts, several other boats spotted the two men in distress. One of them was rescued with a life jacket, but sadly, the second man, who was taken back to the Oyama boat launch to meet first responders, died. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased man,” says Corporal Judith Bertrand, Media Relations Officer for the Kelowna Regional RCMP Detachment. “We want to congratulate the people who helped with the rescue efforts. The use and easy access to life jackets made a significant difference to the outcome of this tragic event.” Police have not released further details about the men involved. The BC coroner’s office was on the scene and will conduct an investigation. ORIGINAL 12:50 p.m One person is believed to have died in Wood Lake on Saturday afternoon. Several Castanet readers reported that a number of emergency vehicles responded to the Oyama boat launch at the northeast corner of Wood Lake late Saturday afternoon. Police remained at the scene until early evening, with a body covered as the boat was launched. The circumstances of the death remain unclear at this time. Castanet has reached out to the Lake Country Fire Department, RCMP, Emergency Health Services and the BC Medical Examiner’s Office for information about the death.
