Police in Waterval, outside Louis Trichardt in Limpopo, have now opened an investigation into the death of the unidentified man, who is believed to be in his 25s or 30s. A video showed him gulping down the bottle in less than two minutes over the weekend as people clapped and cheered him on. But soon it collapsed. According to police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, the incident took place at a local liquor store in Mashamba village in Elim. Brig Mojapelo said patrons took part in a drinking competition in which the person who could consume an entire bottle of Jagermeister within a set time would win R200 (about £10) in cash. “One of them collapsed soon after and was taken to the local clinic, where he was pronounced dead,” Mr Mojapelo said, according to local media. According to a 2017 study, in South Africa, “one in three people reported drinking alcohol, while one in seven reported binge drinking on the average day when alcohol was consumed.” It also added that the prevalence of self-reported binge drinking was higher among men and women in the 25-34 age group.
