ondon’s latest Covid hosts have been revealed as new figures also show around one in 25 people in England had Covid in the past week. Around 2.7 million people across the UK are estimated to have had Covid last week, an 18% increase from 2.3 million the previous week, according to new figures from the Office for National Statistics. That’s the highest estimate since late April, but still below the record high of 4.9 million at the end of March. The new figures also reveal for the week ending July 1, there were eighteen Covid areas in London with a weekly case rate higher than 400 per 100,000. The highest case rates in the capital that week were found in East Putney which had a case rate of 510 per 100,000, according to ONS figures.

Hayes North in Bromley followed closely behind as they had a strike rate of 482.7. Brondesbury Park in Brent had a rate of 472.6, the Woodcote area in Croydon had a rate of 461.6 and the Pinner South area in Harrow had a rate of 459.4. Areas of London by case, with darker areas representing higher rates of cases / ONS Several areas in east London had significantly lower case rates, with the lowest case rates all in the east and north-east of the capital for the week. Loxford Park, in Redbridge, had a case rate of just 38.2 per 100,000, Shadwell North in Tower Hamlets just 38.7 per 100,000 and Ilford North in Redbridge a rate of 43.2 per 100,000. The data is divided into smaller areas called Mean Level Super Output Areas (MSOA), and their names may not exactly align with those commonly used when describing our neighborhoods. Case rates are calculated by dividing the seven-day total by the area’s population and multiplying by 100,000 to make comparison between areas easier. London had a total of 20,058 Covid cases last week, according to the latest figures, and a case rate of 222.8 per 100,000. Meanwhile, the latest figures also showed that the number of people in hospital in England testing positive for Covid-19 was 11,878 on July 7, up 33% week-on-week. Those with Covid symptoms severe enough to need ventilator beds rose to 232 on July 7, a 10% week-on-week increase and the highest number in two months. However, it remained well below previous pandemic peaks, thanks to the success of the vaccine launch.
