Joudrey, wearing a T-shirt and holding a beer, and Graham, in a shirt and tie, both stick out their tongues. Joudrey, 32, was charged Thursday with first-degree murder in the death of Graham, 29, who died in a Toronto hospital two days earlier after setting himself on fire near an east London square. That left Graham’s grieving family, who have known Joudrey for 15 years, scrambling for answers. “John called (Judrey) his brother, it was supposed to be family,” Graham’s younger sister Sumer Graham, 28, wrote in an exchange on Facebook messenger. Graham’s death – the second man to be set on fire in London in the last year – is the city’s third homicide of 2022. “To hurt someone in such a horrible way is so inhumane,” said Sumer Graham.

The two men argued at a home on Noel Avenue, southeast of Trafalgar Street and Clarke Road, on Monday night before leaving separately, police said. A citizen called police to report finding Graham on fire near Admiral Drive and Trafalgar at about 2:20 a.m. of Tuesday. Officers investigating a hit-and-run found a vehicle less than an hour later on Royal Crescent — blocks from the scene of the arson attack — and arrested a man for impaired driving, police said. Investigators soon linked this man to the arson attack. Clive Hubbard, an investigator at the Ontario Fire Marshal’s central office, and two London police coroners investigate the scene where emergency crews responded to a call about a man on fire Tuesday morning. (Dale Carruthers/The London Free Press) Joudrey was charged with attempted murder on Tuesday. The charge was upgraded to first-degree murder – the first such count in London this year – on Thursday. He was scheduled to appear in court on Friday. It’s heartbreaking to see the photo of Graham, his alleged killer, and her other brother, Shane, taken after her grandmother’s funeral, Sumer Graham said.

Known to family and friends as Jonny, Graham had gone out of his way to be there for Joudrey after his brother, Aubrey, died last year, he said. “John and Shane have been by Bradley’s side, helping him, having Brad for dinner and hanging out with him whenever he needed that extra support.” Graham, who worked as a floor installer, is remembered by loved ones for his sense of humor and always putting family, especially his nine-year-old son, first. Graham’s funeral is pending, his sister said. Last year, London saw a record 15 homicides. Investigators have a near-perfect record of bringing homicide charges, with only one case – the 2018 death of William (Bill) MacPherson, 60, whose body was found in a ravine near the River Thames – the last 13 years.
