The Shearstown Brass Band is seen playing at the Pentecostal Tabernacle in Port de Grave on Saturday. John Eford’s life was celebrated on Saturday in his hometown of Port de Grave. As was customary during his political career, the Shearstown Brass Band led the way to the Pentecostal Stage. The popular and charismatic Efford — who served as a cabinet minister in federal and provincial Liberal governments during a 16-year career — died Jan. 2 after a long illness. This afternoon, family and friends gathered to remember ‘Landslide John’, so named because of his many one-sided victories and numerous achievements during his lifetime. The weather also looks promising for a commemorative flotilla that will depart from Port de Grave around 2pm. of Sunday. The destination is Green’s Point, where the family will place a wreath and scatter Efford’s ashes in the water. The public can view the flotilla from the Port de Grave lighthouse.
