Police are investigating after a group of men arrived in a taxi and opened fire on those inside the Orlando East Tavern early Sunday morning. Three people were seriously injured and are being treated at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital along with another victim with less serious injuries. A man whose friend died in the shooting has told how he survived after hiding under a pool table surrounded by bodies. The number of cartridges found at the scene suggests a group of people were firing weapons, said Gauteng provincial police commissioner Elias Mawela. He added: “The preliminary investigation shows that these people were having fun here, in an empty tavern that was open at the correct hours. “Suddenly they heard some shots, when people tried to run out of the tavern. We don’t have the full details at this time of what the motive is and why they targeted these people. At least 14 people have been killed in a shooting at a bar in Johannesburg’s Soweto township. You can see all these people were struggling to get out of the tavern.’ The area where the shootings took place was very dark, making it more difficult to locate people who could identify the suspects, Mr Mawela added. Rifles and a 9mm pistol were used in the attack, national police spokeswoman Dimakatso Sello said. The Soweto bar shooting comes two weeks after 21 teenagers were found dead in a tavern in the East London town. The cause of those deaths has not yet been released by authorities, but the youths were not shot or crushed in a riot, officials said. Additional reporting by The Associated Press
