Highlights from the last committee hearing on January 6
The Jan. 6 panel investigated Donald Trump’s encouragement of extremist groups to join his effort to prevent a peaceful transfer of power at its final public hearing on Tuesday. The committee drew a line between the president’s rhetoric and the violence that day, accusing Trump of leading angry militias and extremists to the Capitol building to stop the certification of the election he lost. The most egregious example of this, the panel said, was a tweet by the then-president about a Jan. 6 rally in which he urged his supporters to “be there, be wild.” “This tweet served as a call to action, and in some cases a call to arms, for many of President Trump’s staunchest supporters,” said committee member Stephanie Murphy. The hearing focused on the role of extremist groups Proud Boys and Oath Keepers in the attack on the US Capitol. Members of both groups are known to have been front and center in the attack on the Capitol on January 6, and leaders of both have been charged with conspiracy to riot for their involvement in the events of that day. The Independent’s Richard Hall reports on the key takeaways from Tuesday’s hearing.
