Sky Sports Rugby League pundit Jon Wilkin reacts as ex-Castleford Hooker Jacques O’Neill leaves the Love Island villa and could now return to his former club
Castleford Tigers have offered social support to Jacques O’Neill following his controversial Love Island exit, but manager Lee Radford is unsure whether the 23-year-old will return to the club.
O’Neill quit the club last month to take part in the reality TV show, but on Tuesday announced his exit from the dating show, saying he needed to “come back to himself”.
He visited Castleford on Wednesday morning and the club have first choice to re-sign the hooker if he wanted to continue his rugby career.
When asked about O’Neill’s re-signing, Castleford manager Lee Radford said: “It’s not something we’ve spoken about, obviously it just happened last night, he flew home last night.
“He looked tired, he hadn’t slept, obviously all the euphoria of him doing what he did, I guess that’s probably a discussion for further down the line, I think.”
Speaking about O’Neill’s departure from the show to protect his mental health, Radford said: “Like any social level there are barriers in front of you, unfortunately, making sure people are around you, whether it’s your family either for the club associated with it is very important.”
Speaking about his own mental health experience, Radford added: “The criticism that you tend to hold on to and use as motivation, I think it’s a generational thing.
Lee Radford has not spoken to Jacques O’Neill about his return to Castleford
“I think it’s more open and talked about now than it’s probably ever been. I think I’m probably from a different generation.”
Castleford confirmed in a statement that O’Neill would be able to receive support from Castleford’s welfare officer “if he wishes”.
A statement said: “Prior to his appearance on reality TV show Love Island, O’Neill was contacted by the Tigers’ welfare officer and this support will continue to be offered to him. Along with the welcoming nature of the environment of our first team, of which he has been a part since he was 16.
“Castleford Tigers’ main focus with Jacques at this stage will be to support him. Everyone at the club is looking forward to welcoming Jacques and his mother Janet to The Mend-A-Hose Jungle for a Betfred Super League match very soon, to cheer on the Fords.
“The club will make no further comment at this stage.”
O’Neill has made 29 appearances for the Tigers and has been named in England Knights’ 2021 performance squad.
