“One of the myths I’ve heard recently was that someone thought that people can bring their period at will, which we can’t,” naturopathic doctor Anne Hussain told CTV News Channel on Saturday. “So we definitely need to have more inclusive discussions so that everyone has a basic understanding of this.” Part of the issue, she says, is that there is still a lot of stigma, taboo and secrecy surrounding reproductive health. People continue to use euphemisms for periods or feel they have to hide their period products, Hussain says, which can be disempowering. “Historically, people with periods have been excluded from so many parts of life and society, and unfortunately, although we’ve made progress, we still have a long way to go in that direction,” she said. Learning the right terminology and accessing the right sources instead of “Doctor Google” will also help get accurate information, he says.
