Jordan Wandy, 21, was hit during the shooting and taken to the hospital but is expected to survive, according to the Denver Police Department. In addition, police confirmed that five other people — three women and two men — suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the incident. No officers were injured. In a news release, the department said: “Investigators are working to determine if the injuries [of the five people] was a direct or indirect result of the officer-involved shooting.” The release went on to explain that an indirect injury could be from a bullet or shrapnel. Around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, officers patrolling the downtown bar district near 20th and Larimer streets observed an altercation between Waddy and two other individuals. An arrest affidavit released shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday goes on to say officers reported seeing Waddy gesturing toward his waistband as if he were armed. Officers began following Waddy and at one point officers reported the suspect pulled out a gun and pointed it at the officers. He is currently being held on suspicion of felony menacing and possession of a weapon by a previous offender, according to police. According to records obtained by Denver7, Waddy had multiple run-ins with law enforcement, including a now-dismissed 2017 charge of first-degree murder. “The investigation into this incident, which includes interviews and forensic work, is active and ongoing. The Denver Police Department understands the community’s desire for additional information, and the Department is committed to both maintaining the integrity of this investigation and releasing additional details once information is confirmed through the investigation,” the DPD statement said. A witness, who did not want to be named, shared what he saw with Denver7 and a video he took from the scene moments after it all happened. He says the police showed up after a group of people were arguing in the street and then heard gunshots. “It was definitely a bit traumatic to see it go down,” the man said. “I heard maybe 6 or 7 gunshots. I look to my left and I saw a girl who was hit in the thigh and hit an artery and was bleeding.” The three officers involved in the shooting are currently on administrative leave, the department said, which is standard procedure. The investigation into the officer-involved shooting is being conducted under officer-involved shooting protocol and includes representatives from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, the Colorado State Patrol, the Denver District Attorney’s Office, the Denver Police Department, and includes oversight by the Bureau of of the Independent Observer”.
