Now, thanks to iOS 16, you can make your lock screen background a tribute to your most loved emojis. Here’s how to do it.

1. Open your Settings and scroll down to Wallpaper.

Start by opening Wallpaper. Credit: Apple The wallpaper will be in the third grouping of settings, with a blue icon.

2. Once you are in Wallpaper, tap “Add New Wallpaper”.

Create wallpaper that lets your emojis do the talking. Credit: Apple Any previous lock screen and home screen background will be saved here. Scroll below them until you see “Add New Wallpaper”.

4. Tap on the smiley face in the lower left corner and select your emoji.

Portrait of a life in three emojis. Credit: Apple The edit menu will allow you to select up to six emojis and you can make any combination you want. When you’re done, tap out of the emoji window.

5. Scroll left or right while on the main editing screen to see the pattern options.

Choose a large scale pattern Credit: Apple Choose concentric circles or many other options. Credit: Apple Options will include Small Mesh, Medium Mesh, Large Mesh, Rings and Spiral. This will determine how your chosen emoji complements your background.

6. Tap on the three dots in the lower right corner to change the background color.

Choose the best color to complement your emoji palette. Credit: Apple The popup will display 12 color options, plus a sliding gradation scale to change the hue of each color. Choose your favorite, then tap out of the window when you’re done.

7. Tap the date, time, and/or widget space if you want to edit those features.

8. Tap “Done” in the upper right corner when you’re satisfied with your creation.
