The latest: Authorities say a 12-year-old girl was among two people injured when the gunman opened fire with a long gun at the mall south of Indianapolis. Her injuries were minor, Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers said in a statement.
Greenwood Police Chief Jim Eason said at a news conference late Sunday that the girl was taken to a local hospital as a precaution and the other person who was shot was in stable condition at the hospital. His injuries were not immediately known.
Leading the story: Police received reports shortly after 6 p.m. that a gunman entered the food court and began shooting, Ison said at a news conference earlier in the afternoon.
“It appears he had a rifle with multiple magazines of ammunition,” Eason added. He later confirmed that a 22-year-old gunman bystander from nearby Bartholomew County shot the gunman.
“The real hero of the day is the citizen who was legally carrying a firearm in this food court and was able to stop the shooter almost as soon as he started.” – Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison The big picture: The mall violence is the latest in a string of shootings to rock the US in recent weeks, including massacres in Buffalo, New York, and the Uvalde, Texas, elementary school that prompted Congress to pass safety legislation of weapons.
