An airport spokesperson confirmed to CBC News that a system outage with Nav Canada has led to ongoing problems. There is also an ongoing problem with WestJet’s self-service bag drop, although previous issues nationwide involving infrastructure and online payment services have been resolved. Self-service bag drop is not working properly in Calgary as well as Ottawa, Saskatoon and Halifax. “Guests are encouraged to arrive early and check their flight status before heading to the airport,” read a statement posted by the airline on its Twitter feed. Nav Canada, which manages the country’s air navigation system, said the outage was caused by one of its telecommunications service providers, Zayo. According to Nav Canada, Zayo was estimating a recovery time of two to four hours at about 8:30 a.m. “Ensuring the safe flow of air traffic in Canadian airspace is Nav Canada’s top priority,” said Brian Boudreau, a spokesman for Nav Canada, in an email. “Therefore, air traffic control will reduce the flow of departures and arrivals temporarily in some cases until Zayo restores service. Procedures are in place to ensure the safety of aircraft in our airspace.” Due to outages in the NAV CANADA and WestJet system, guests flying via YYC may experience delays. We appreciate your patience as we support their efforts to resolve the issues. Contact your airline for flight information. We will provide updates as they become available. —@FlyYYC The airport spokesperson said more updates will be provided as they become available. A spokesperson for the Greater Toronto Airports Authority said the outage appears to be affecting only Western Canada, adding that operations at Toronto’s Pearson Airport are normal.
