Ottawa police have issued fines of more than $1,000 to the driver of a truck that drove down Wellington Street on Friday.

Police shared an image of the vehicle on social media: a white truck covered in “Freedom Convoy” images and loaded with flags. “Reminder: Wellington Street remains closed to unauthorized vehicle traffic,” the Ottawa Police Service tweeted. “The fines were issued for driving without a licence, driving with a hand-held device, driving on a closed road and a number plate offence.” Wellington Street has been closed to most traffic since late February, when police cleared out “Freedom Convoy” participants who had camped and parked vehicles along the road in protest of the COVID-19 vaccine mandate. The street currently falls under the jurisdiction of the City of Ottawa, but a parliamentary committee is considering expanding the parliamentary district to include Wellington and nearby Sparks Street. Larry Brookson, head of the Parliamentary Protection Service, told MPs last month that he believed Wellington Street should remain closed and should have strong barriers preventing vehicles from entering.
