Two additional people were treated nearby, said Chief Jim Ison of the Greenwood Police Department. Authorities have not released a motive for the shooting and have not identified the gunman, other than an adult male. “We experienced a mass shooting this afternoon at Greenwood Park Mall,” said Mayor Mark Myers. “The Greenwood Police Department is checking the scene. I am in direct contact with the command post and there is no other threat.” He asked the public to stay away from the area. “This tragedy strikes at the core of our community,” Mr Myers said. “Please offer your prayers to the victims and our first responders.” Mr. Ison told a news conference Sunday that the local emergency call center began receiving calls about the shootings at the food court around 6 p.m. He said the shooting ended when an armed citizen stopped the gunman. “It appears that a good Samaritan who was armed noticed the shooting in progress and shot the shooter.” He added that investigators and other personnel would not process the mall crime scene until a state bomb squad could determine whether a “suspicious” backpack left in a mall bathroom was dangerous. Police said on Facebook they were seeking witnesses to the shooting. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said on Twitter that it was assisting local authorities and urged people to avoid the area. He said multiple agencies are working to clean up the mall, which is about 15 miles south of Indianapolis.
