Crews were working to contain a wildfire in the Conception Bay South area of the Avalon Peninsula Sunday afternoon. A bomber plane makes passes and drops water on the fire in the Lawrence Pond and Kelligrews subdivision area. VOCM began receiving calls, photos and video of smoke billowing from the area just after 1 p.m. The latest reports are that crews were able to bring the fire under control. VOCM will update the situation with more details as they become available. Meanwhile, the City of Holyrood has canceled tonight’s fireworks display associated with Squidfest due to the hot, windy and dry conditions. The ongoing fire ban and high fire rating will temporarily postpone fireworks until RibFest on August 6.
